Act I: Elizabethan culture, marriage, and a father's perspective

Lord Capulet urges Paris to wait another two years before marrying Juliet, and insists that she must consent to the marriage.  Is this typical of Elizabethan attitudes towards marriage?  What does Lord Capulet's response reveal about his character?

  1. This is typical Elizabethan attitudes towards marriage. In the Elizabethan Era the women hardly had , if any choice, who they got married too. Lord Capulet wants Paris to wait until Juliet becomes a little older to marry her. But, he says she has to consent. This shows that Lord Capulet is respecting to Elizabethan ways.

  2. This isn't normal Elizabethan attitude because back then women hardly ever had a choice to marry or not she had to do what they were told. Lord Capulet wanted her to wait because she was to young and even then she had to agree to marry Paris this shows that Lord Capulet wants her to have the option of free choice. He cares about his daughter and doesn't want her to rush into things. He wants her to be happy.

  3. This isn't the actual case like the older age people got married to help them. Lord Capulet wanted Juliet to wait on being married because she as too young. But back in that era women barely had any say over their marriage life.

  5. Its not normal. I looked it up and it said the age for marraige was 21.
I believe Lord Capulet made a good choice in saying that Juliet should at least wait two years. Shes way to young at 13 or 14.
    Age 16 would be wiser.
Though i agree on his desision on telling Paris to wait.

  7. I dont think that its normal because back then women hardley ever had a choice to marry. She had to do whatever it was that they was told to do. Lord Capulet wanted her to wait because he said that she was to young to be getting married to Paris. He wanted her to have a choice of who she gets to marry.

  8. 1) Yes,this is typical Elizabethan era attitude on marriage. During this time period, women didn't exactly have a choice in marriage, their families married them to whoever would be best for them, in relationships, and financial aspects. Many parents would have their children wait until a certain age to marry so they could have children which bonded the families even more.
    2) Lord Capulet's response proves that he cares about family, but also respect, he wishes Juliet to be happy, therefore giving her two years of time to make a decision.
