Act I: Elizabethan culture, marriage, and a father's perspective

Lord Capulet urges Paris to wait another two years before marrying Juliet, and insists that she must consent to the marriage.  Is this typical of Elizabethan attitudes towards marriage?  What does Lord Capulet's response reveal about his character?

  2. This is typical Elizabethan attitudes towards marriage. In the Elizabethan Era the woman had hardly, if any choice, who the married. Lord Capulet wants Paris to wait until Juliet becomes a little older to marry her. But, he says she has to consent. This shows that Lord Capulet is sticking to Elizabethan ways.

  3. It is typical to a certain extent, Lord Capulet did arrange the marriage for Juliet, but he also told Paris to wait two years before he proposes to Juliet. And to me it shows that he follows Elizabethan traditions.

  4. This is typical of Elizabethan attitudes towards marriage because during the Elizabethan Era they had arranged marriages. Lord Capulet's character is revealed when Juliet tells him she doesn't want to marry Paris. He's very angry and bitter towards his daughter.

  5. Lord Capulet's response about the marriage is not that of the typical Elizabethan attitude because the daughter does not always have to have the consent of the marriage but Lord Capulet lets her have consent.

  7. Marriages were arranged to get your family closer to the throne than before. Basically, to better your family's social status. Most of the time, you didn't truly love the person you married, wives were practically property of their husbands. I don't see why they have to wait two years, when back then it was normal to get married at that age. I'm not quite sure at what Lord Capulet was thinking, maybe he wanted Paris and Juliet to actually love each other before they got married. This is not the typical Elizabethan attitude.

  8. This is the typical attitude towards marriage from an elizabethan because the elizabethans regarded marriage. Some of they arranged marriages were just insurance for a uncertain future.

  12. Yes, this is typical Elizabethan era attitude toward marriage. Families at this time would marry to raise their status or the financial aspects of their society. The parents would marry off they're children to increase the family's respect and status.

  17. I think that it probably was, many people wanted to have the throne back then. That every time that you married it would make you stronger, so you would better your family name. So I'm assuming many were arranged. Although he wanted them to wait two years which is not typically the Elizabethan attitude, mostly because it was normal to get married at that age I really don't see why he wanted them to wait. I guess he wanted them to actually love each other before marriage.

  19. This is typical, because back in the days, the throne was wanted by everyone. And Lord Capulet's got really mad, just because Juliet, loved Romeo, and not Paris.

  20. Lord Capulet's behavior wasn't really called for.And Juliet should be able to love whoever she wants to. And just because Romeo doesn't have all that royalty like Paris doesn't mean he can't love, and care for Juliet.

  22. I think that, Juliet should be with whoever can love, and care for her more, and better. And it doesn't have to be who other people want it to be.It ups to her.And Paris, well im not saying that he's a not good for her.But if he can love her , and giver her what she needs who knows. It maybe either or.

  23. I think that Juliet should be with whom ever loves her. And who ever she loves. And she doesn't have to be with the one that everyone suggests. And who knows Romeo, and Paris seem like two loving people. But then again it's who Juliet wants. Who she feels can love her.
